Can Indians get jobs in Japan with visa sponsorship? Official data on the visas Indians hold, the industries hiring them, pay, and how to apply from India.
Yes, there are jobs in Japan for Indians with visa sponsorship, on the same terms as for anyone else. Japan had 31,636 Indian workers in October 2025. Of those, 70% held skilled work visas, against 34% of all foreign workers (MHLW, 2026). For this guide we analyzed the latest government tables on Indians in Japan: which visas they hold, where they work, what jobs pay and how to apply from India.
Key Takeaways
- Nationality doesn't change the rules. The job must fit a visa category, and you must meet its degree or experience requirement.
- Japan's Indian workforce grew 65% in four years, from 19,169 in 2021 to 31,636 in 2025 (MHLW).
- IT employs 18% of Indian workers in Japan, nearly five times the average for foreign workers.
- A Japan work visa costs Indian nationals INR 500, but the employer's Certificate of Eligibility takes about two months first.
- About a third of Indian residents live in Tokyo, with the largest community in Edogawa.

Yes. Japan's visa rules are the same for every passport. To sponsor you, an employer needs a real job that fits a visa type. You need the degree or work history that visa asks for. For most office and IT roles, that means one visa. The Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services visa is Japan's main work visa for office, IT and language jobs. It needs a relevant degree or, in most cases, 10 years of experience. Our guide to that visa explains the rules in detail.
The numbers show Indians are well placed. Japan's Indian workforce rose 11.2% in the year to October 2025 and 65% since 2021 (MHLW). Of the 31,636 Indian workers, 22,067 held professional or technical statuses, and 14,248 were on the Engineer/Specialist in Humanities visa (MHLW, 2026).
The pay rule protects you too. For the main work visas, you must be paid at least what a Japanese worker would get for the same job (ISA). An employer can't pay you less because you're foreign.
At the end of 2025, 58,999 Indian nationals lived in Japan (ISA, 2026). Their visa mix looks very different from the average foreign resident's.

| Status of residence | Indian residents | Share of Indians | Share of all foreign residents |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engineer/Specialist in Humanities | 14,567 | 24.7% | 11.5% |
| Dependent (family of a visa holder) | 13,367 | 22.7% | 8.6% |
| Permanent resident | 10,084 | 17.1% | 23.0% |
| Skilled Labor | 7,932 | 13.4% | 1.3% |
| Highly Skilled Professional | 1,577 | 2.7% | 0.8% |
| Intra-company Transferee | 805 | 1.4% | 0.5% |
| Specified Skilled Worker | 758 | 1.3% | 9.5% |

Four things stand out:
The Specified Skilled Worker visa, Japan's main route for blue-collar jobs, is rare among Indians. Most Indian residents come through degree-based or trade-based visas instead.
IT is the clearest difference. In October 2025, 18.0% of Indian workers in Japan worked in information and communications, against 3.8% of all foreign workers (MHLW, 2026).
| Industry | Indian workers | Share of Indians | Share of all foreign workers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Information and communications (IT) | 5,680 | 18.0% | 3.8% |
| Manufacturing | 4,573 | 14.5% | 24.7% |
| Hotels and restaurants | 4,447 | 14.1% | 12.4% |
| Other services | 3,973 | 12.6% | 15.2% |
| Wholesale and retail | 3,025 | 9.6% | 13.3% |
| Education | 1,652 | 5.2% | 3.2% |

For job seekers, that means three main routes:
Manufacturing hires fewer Indians than average. Japan's foreign factory workforce leans on the trainee and Specified Skilled Worker routes, which few Indians use.
Japan doesn't publish pay by nationality, but it does publish pay by visa type and by job. In 2025, foreign workers on skilled visas earned ¥313,200 a month in base pay. That excludes bonuses and overtime, and their average age was 32.4 (MHLW, 2026). It was up 7.3% in a year.
By job, across all workers in Japan, annual pay including bonuses was:
| Job | Average annual pay, 2025 |
|---|---|
| Systems consultant or designer | ¥8.89 million |
| Mechanical engineer | ¥6.59 million |
| Software developer | ¥5.78 million |
| Cook | ¥3.79 million |

Larger companies pay more for every one of these jobs. When you compare offers, look at the full package, including bonus and allowances. Our guide to foreigner salaries in Japan breaks down take-home pay.
You can't apply for a work visa on your own. Your employer starts the process after you accept an offer. A Certificate of Eligibility (COE) is Immigration's confirmation that you and the job meet the visa's conditions. You need it before you can apply for the visa itself.
One route isn't open to Indians. Japan's digital nomad visa is limited to citizens of a list of countries, and India isn't on it. To work in Japan, you need a Japanese employer and a COE.
Not for every job. Many IT and research roles work in English, especially at global companies and tech firms. Japanese still helps. It gives you more employers to choose from and makes daily life easier. It also earns points toward the Highly Skilled Professional visa: 15 for N1 and 10 for N2.
Some roles are built mainly on language, such as translation or front-desk work. For those, Immigration has expected CEFR B2 since April 2026, and any JLPT N2 pass counts. Our guide to what JLPT level you need covers which jobs need which level.
Tokyo has the largest community. On 1 July 2026, 20,642 Indian nationals lived in Tokyo (Tokyo Metropolitan Government, 2026). That's roughly a third of all Indian residents in Japan.
Within Tokyo, the community is concentrated in two eastern wards:
For families, a CBSE or international school nearby often decides where to live. Our guide to where to live in Tokyo compares rents and commutes across 16 areas.
Japan and India have had a social security agreement since October 2016 (Embassy of India, Tokyo). It matters in two ways.
If you leave Japan before qualifying for a pension, you may be able to claim part of your contributions back as a lump-sum withdrawal.
We analyzed two government datasets. The first is the Immigration Services Agency's table of residents by nationality and visa at the end of 2025. The second is MHLW's October 2025 report on foreign workers by nationality and industry. We downloaded the original Excel files rather than relying on news summaries, and we ran every share calculation in this guide ourselves. In both datasets we found the same pattern: Indians in Japan are concentrated in skilled visas and IT far more than other nationalities. The Atarashift editorial team checked every figure against these primary sources on 17 October 2026.
Yes. Japanese employers sponsor Indian candidates on the same terms as anyone else. In October 2025, 22,067 of Japan's 31,636 Indian workers held skilled work visas, most of them sponsored by their employer.
It is easiest in IT, engineering and research, where many teams work in English. Roles that mainly use Japanese are hard without N2 or above.
The visa fee is INR 500 for a single entry, plus a service charge at the VFS Global centre. Your employer's Certificate of Eligibility application is free.
Plan for about two to three months in total. The employer's Certificate of Eligibility took about two months on average in the year to July 2026. The visa itself then takes at least six working days.
Yes. Your spouse and children can apply for the Dependent visa. At the end of 2025, 13,367 Indian nationals in Japan held one.
Yes. 10,084 Indian nationals held permanent residence at the end of 2025. The usual route takes 10 years, but the Highly Skilled Professional visa can cut that to one or three years.
Japan's Indian community is growing fast, and most people arrive on skilled work visas. If you have a degree or solid experience in IT, engineering or another skilled field, sponsorship is realistic.
