The mission of the Engineering Office (EO) is to establish a strong and sustainable engineering organization. We lead internal projects and build systems that create the best possible engineering experience, enabling engineering teams to deliver value to customers quickly and continuously. This position is on the team within the Engineering Office responsible for cost and budget management for the engineering organization. Mercari’s engineering organization spans multiple products and group companies, and manages expenses that continue to grow in both scale and variety as the business expands, including cloud infrastructure, SaaS, and development tools. The team’s mission is to ensure that these costs are “predictable, explainable, and useful for management decision-making” across the engineering organization. Rather than simply reducing costs, we aim to create an environment where management and engineering can use the same data to discuss where to invest. This role connects two areas that cannot succeed on accounting and finance expertise alone, or engineering expertise alone. Working with stakeholders, you will efficiently gather information from engineers, use that data for accounting and decision-making, and promote the visualization and management of information for a range of use cases, supporting the sound and strategic operation of the entire engineering organization. Responsibilities include managing budgets, analyzing budget-versus-actual results, and building and improving processes for the engineering department; reviewing and operating allocation models for development expenses and tool fees across multiple businesses and group companies; ensuring the appropriate operation and efficiency of capitalization processes for software development; visualizing and reporting costs and investment status to corporate planning teams, executives, and the CTO; and coordinating and building consensus with engineers, product managers, finance, accounting, and audit teams. You will be a key person connecting expense data with the realities of development teams and translating that information into a form that enables management to make timely decisions. You can proactively identify issues in areas with undeveloped processes or person-dependent operations, and redesign systems and workflows that can be used across the company. If you have a background at an SIer or consulting firm, you can apply your experience translating customer challenges into systems and processes. The Engineering Office’s activities are wide-ranging, and its members have diverse skill sets. This is an environment where you can develop and demonstrate a broad range of skills without limiting your potential. Mercari is constantly growing and changing. You can adapt flexibly to that change, learn new skills, and continue taking on challenges.
- Approximately 2–3 or more years of experience managing budgets and analyzing costs in a system development organization or IT field, or experience at an SIer, IT consulting firm, or similar organization gathering customer challenges and business requirements and translating them into systems or concrete business processes - Initiative to make the current state visible and establish and embed processes in undeveloped areas or chaotic environments - Communication skills to build consensus smoothly with diverse stakeholders, including engineers, product managers, finance, and audit teams - Ability to act decisively in a rapidly changing environment, making decisions and proposals flexibly and proactively in response to questions without clear answers or matters that have not yet been decided - A positive approach to adapting flexibly to changing circumstances and decisions, with a balanced perspective and the ability to make reasonable compromises - Basic understanding of the cost structures of cloud services such as Google Cloud and AWS, or a strong willingness to learn - Experience using generative AI, LLMs, AI agents, or similar tools to improve work efficiency or independently improve processes, or a strong interest and willingness to learn - Japanese: Proficient (CEFR C1) required
- Practical experience managing and optimizing cloud costs - Experience collaborating with an engineering organization at a company that develops its own products - Experience with reporting using data analysis or BI tools - English: Independent (CEFR B1) preferred
