To maintain and enhance our business advantages and exclusivity over the long term, we urgently need to strengthen the protection of intellectual property rights in alignment with our R&D strategy through Patent Portfolio Management. As we expand our team and the scope of its responsibilities, we are seeking someone who can draw on their knowledge of life sciences and cosmetic materials and bases, including skincare and makeup, to help advance the protection of inventions arising from Shiseido’s cutting-edge research and development, as well as our intellectual property strategy. You will be responsible for understanding the research strategy that enables Shiseido to continue highlighting the points of difference and competitive advantages of the value it creates and delivers to consumers and society over the long term. You will also be responsible for intellectual property (patent) strategy and Patent Portfolio Management, and for securing and maintaining appropriate patent rights. Depending on your experience and skills, you will work in areas related to product formulations, preferably skincare or base makeup. Your responsibilities will include identifying inventions and advising on patent applications, proposing filing plans, handling applications and prosecution, conducting clearance and responding to third-party patents, performing freedom-to-operate (FTO) and prior-art searches, reviewing external disclosures, and creating, analyzing, and managing patent portfolios. You will work within an R&D organization recognized as one of the best in the industry, engaging directly with its research and development processes and outputs as you identify inventions and handle their filing and protection. This is a dynamic position that goes beyond routine work, offering the opportunity to build intellectual property strategies in alignment with—and influencing—upstream R&D strategy. In the future, you can plan a career path with opportunities to become either an organizational manager or an intellectual property specialist. Although each team member covers a different area, four members hold Japanese patent attorney qualifications, and the team works collaboratively, supporting one another to advance its work. The work environment is hybrid, with an average of approximately 0–30 hours of overtime per month and remote work approximately 50% of the time.
- Practical experience handling patent applications and prosecution in a chemical-related industry, such as pharmaceuticals, food, cosmetics, household products, or chemical raw materials, in Japan or overseas; alternatively, experience in product formulation development - Ability to identify and uncover substantive inventions through interviews with researchers and similar methods - Ability to independently build an efficient technology and intellectual property portfolio that contributes to achieving strategic objectives - Ability to identify relevant patents held by other companies and proactively drive necessary responses - Strong communication skills for working smoothly with relevant internal and external departments and personnel
- At least five years of R&D-related work experience in cosmetic ingredients or formulations - Japanese patent attorney qualification or other intellectual property-related qualifications or skills - Broad knowledge of beauty and cosmetics in Japan and overseas - English proficiency - Motivation to pursue a management position in the future
