Candidates should have a genuine passion for bringing products to market that fundamentally transform the world’s energy infrastructure, and should want to work in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment. Our team members demonstrate creativity, passion, and a desire to break new ground in a constantly changing technological landscape, alongside a strong work ethic and a team-oriented mindset. Based in Japan, the Project Engineer will be responsible for domestic projects delivering Tesla products (Megapack) and will have the opportunity to work on some of the country’s largest grid-scale battery projects. The role also serves as a key link with world-class engineering and business teams around the globe. It therefore requires the ability to address a broad range of engineering challenges, as well as the knowledge and experience to carry out work independently. A strong foundation in electrical engineering (low, high, and extra-high voltage), power systems, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, and communications is essential. This position offers the opportunity to contribute directly to the success of projects that support the global energy transition. The Project Engineer (SCADA) role is broad in scope, with a focus on delivering and commissioning large-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) projects and contributing to Tesla’s mission through control design and implementation. The position calls for a wide range of engineering skills, including problem-solving to mitigate project risks while coordinating with key stakeholders and negotiating requirements, as well as identifying issues in the field. You will work closely with the internal SCADA team to define complex and evolving TSO requirements as clear, high-level concepts and control policies. You will also play an important role in expanding Tesla’s capabilities by building interfaces for dedicated-line online connections with general transmission and distribution utilities, as well as for dispatch instructions from electricity markets. Develop and implement monitoring and control schemes for large-scale grid battery projects. Manage the overall SCADA design, integration, deployment, and commissioning, both on site and remotely. Manage project installation and commissioning, including point-to-point (P2P) testing and system integration verification, either in the field or remotely. Support the implementation of cybersecurity measures required for critical infrastructure telemetry. Understand and define functional requirements and feedback from the market, and communicate them to internal business and engineering teams. Support the development of new features by preparing specifications and test plans, assisting with development and testing, managing deployment, and documenting new features. Serve as a technical point of contact for internal and external parties, including customers, to support the sale and deployment of Tesla products. Work with external partners to verify the technical suitability of Tesla’s proposals, review requests for proposals (RFPs), and estimate required effort. Prepare technical and process documentation to support project evaluation and deployment. Review the design of electrical equipment and balance-of-plant (BOP) equipment at battery storage facilities. Identify issues at operating battery storage facilities; conduct and report root-cause analyses; analyze SCADA data and protective relay events; and troubleshoot and implement corrective actions. Apply lessons learned to improve and automate specifications, scope documents, processes, and commissioning report templates.
