Anthropic is scaling compute internationally — growing our footprint in new countries. We're hiring a Country Lead to be the single, accountable owner of our compute strategy in Japan: the person who leads a team of cross-functional experts driving site selection, leasing, energy, financing, government relations and policy, community engagement, construction, and operations. This person will be ultimately responsible for bringing gigawatts of compute online in Japan. You won't build this alone. The specialist functions — leasing, energy, policy, construction, finance — are hired and managed centrally by functional leads based in San Francisco. Your job is to provide cross-functional leadership over that team in-country: coordinating and driving accountability across workstreams, while representing Anthropic externally with government and industry counterparts in Japan. This is a high-ambiguity, high-trust role for someone who can bring structure to a fast-growing, cross-functional effort without needing formal authority to do it.
- Japanese national with established links into government and the energy industry strongly preferred. - Structured thinker with a track record of learning new domains quickly and going deep fast. - Excellent communicator, comfortable representing Anthropic to senior government, utility, and industry stakeholders. - Demonstrated ability to lead and coordinate cross-functional teams without direct line authority. - Hyper-organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to own multiple concurrent workstreams at once. - Comfortable with ambiguity; a problem solver who drives structure into undefined situations. - Background in energy, infrastructure, or a related sector.
- Prior experience with large-scale infrastructure or datacenter development. - Existing relationships with Japanese federal or provincial government bodies relevant to energy, land use, or industrial development. - Experience managing or overseeing capital-intensive projects. - Familiarity with the compute, cloud, or datacenter industry.
- Competitive compensation and benefits. - Optional equity donation matching. - Generous vacation and parental leave. - Flexible working hours. - Lovely office space in which to collaborate with colleagues.
