As an MSL, the role is responsible for executing basic MSL tasks under the guidance of a superior and with support from a senior MSL. This includes building trusted relationships with Key Individuals (KIs) in the therapeutic area and implementing the medical plan through scientific communication. The role practices fair and neutral medical and scientific communication with HCPs, gathers and reports unmet medical needs to advance medicine in the therapeutic area, and optimizes the value of Janssen products.
As a Specialist, in addition to the above, the role leads projects and tasks of the MSL group in the therapeutic area and drives them to success. It makes timely use of new medical and scientific information from various perspectives, communicates with assigned KIs, and builds trusted relationships. It analyzes and identifies key MSL findings and provides them to the DA team for use in formulating and revising DA strategy and MAP. It also contributes to the development of junior MSLs assigned to DAs.
As a Senior Specialist, in addition to the above, the role ensures the success of projects and tasks across the entire MSL department and the MAF DA team. The role requires strategic agility; the ability to consider and propose MSL strategies aligned with broader therapeutic-area strategy, identify solutions to unmet medical needs and clinical questions, prioritize projects using varied data, propose actions aligned with business plan and medical plan goals, collaborate cross-functionally, evaluate data and suggest actions to improve scientific output, and continually assess and adapt MSL strategy execution.
The role requires product and therapeutic-area knowledge, including understanding therapeutic areas, products, treatment options, domestic and international market information, competitors, the medical environment, and regulations. It uses scientific knowledge to analyze data and differentiate the organization, supports MAF strategies and their relevance to medical plans, shares relevant new scientific research, interprets clinical research reports and literature using statistical concepts, and contributes to research proposals and protocol creation.
The role requires scientific communication effectiveness, including researching, organizing, and articulating complex scientific data; engaging stakeholders; using scientific data to respond to opportunities and challenges; tailoring multi-channel communications and presentations to customers; proposing and supporting medical education programs that address unmet medical needs; and being recognized as a science partner by internal and external stakeholders.
The role uses communication, engagement skills, and available data to derive actionable insights into customer needs and priorities, determine common goals, and contribute to business and medical plans. It builds and maintains partnerships with key external stakeholders, advises others in MAF on effective engagement, and develops integrated, innovative, multi-channel customer engagement plans across departments.
The role builds collaborative relationships across the organization and departments, promotes business and medical plans, contributes to goals as a cross-functional team member, creates opportunities for collaboration, aligns project and business goals with internal stakeholders, clarifies roles and responsibilities, and secures agreement on plans.
The role assesses and prioritizes evidence gaps based on external stakeholder needs and business strategy; understands the need for real-world evidence and available data sources; identifies evidence-generation opportunities aligned with therapeutic-area and brand strategies; understands study concepts, protocols, analytical plans, and biostatistical methods; works with clinical operations teams to address medical gaps; and advises on preparation of published papers.
The role involves extensive external interactions with medical doctors, especially Key Opinion Leaders, and other medical staff such as pharmacists and nurses. Internal interactions include R&D, Clinical Regulatory, PV, PMS, HPMA, Communications, Sales, Marketing, Global and AP Medical Affairs, and Medical Affairs leaders and members globally and across AP.
For internal applicants, position title and level may vary based on experience and interview evaluation.
