In the Shops team, we're building Mercari's B2C marketplace. Mercari began as a marketplace between people; we extend that to businesses selling directly to customers, including higher-value categories that need more trust and quality assurance than person-to-person selling can easily offer. Giving customers confidence in what they buy, and giving businesses the tools to sell it well, is our work. We run two products at different stages. Mercari Shops is live today, used by businesses and their customers. M Department is a newer B2C service still taking shape. Both are built on a shared foundation, and that's where this role sits. We're a mix of backgrounds and first languages. We'd rather surface a disagreement early than find it in production. Build and ship backend features in Go across product details, catalog, checkout, and order and seller management. Own a feature area end to end: work the design out with the team and see it through to a decision. Early on you will do this with support; the more you grow, the more you lead. Design APIs and data models, and keep their contracts clear for the frontend, mobile, and partner teams that depend on them. Write readable, well-tested code and play an active part in code reviews. More experienced engineers will review your work and help you grow. Help operate what you build: join the on-call rotation (with support while you get up to speed) and see incidents through to a fix. Keep documentation and runbooks current as the systems change. Unique Challenges: Shops and M Department share the same backend services, so every feature, schema migration, and API change has to work for both without breaking the one already serving customers. It's brownfield, which is harder than greenfield: backward compatibility, cross-tenant data isolation, and phased deployment aren't negotiable. We look for engineers who focus on solving problems rather than staying within a single role. Your main work will be backend, but you'll regularly work across frontend, mobile, and infrastructure as needed. We believe in growing engineers who can think and contribute beyond a single technology stack, and you'll leave with a broader skill set than you arrived with. AI tools are part of how we work every day, from writing code to reviewing PRs. We're looking for people who are eager to shape how we use them and push what they can do. Mistakes cost sellers money, so we rely on tests, staged rollouts, and code review to move fast.
- A solid software engineering foundation. You can build and ship working backend code, whether from a job, internships, or substantial personal or academic projects. - Comfortable in at least one programming language, and happy to work mainly in Go. Prior Go experience isn't required if you're willing to learn it. - Familiarity with API design (gRPC or REST) and relational databases such as Postgres. - Testing, code review, and version control are a normal part of how you work. - Able to work in a team and put your thinking clearly in writing. - Curious about AI tools and open to using them every day.
- Professional experience building and running backend services in production. - Production experience with Go. - Operating services on a cloud platform (we use GCP and Kubernetes), including on-call and monitoring. - Some experience contributing to system or API design decisions. - Familiarity with e-commerce or marketplaces, though experience with backend in another domain might work just as well. - Comfortable working on early-stage products where the requirements and foundations are still taking shape.
