This is a newly created role in Japan to support the launch and development of the new commodities business in Japan. This Commodity Operations role provides operational expertise to the business and clients across the end-to-end trade lifecycle for commodity derivatives, physical metal distribution (import and export), metal financing, and logistics management for physical metal movements. The role requires close partnership with business desks, infrastructure teams, and external parties across Asia, London, India, and Manila, including Sales and Trading, Middle Office, Technology, Legal, Compliance, Finance, regional delivery hubs, logistics providers, warehouse operators, and listed derivatives and exchange stakeholders. Partner with the metals trading desk and key stakeholders on new business initiatives to ensure appropriate front-to-back controls are implemented. Maintain close cooperation and communication with colleagues in other trading hubs, clients, logistics providers, and warehouse operators to support seamless logistics operations across locations and regions. Manage logistics processes, including documentation, customs clearance, warehouse release instructions, invoicing, and secure settlement, in accordance with internal control procedures, regulatory requirements, and client delivery timelines. Support the confirmation and settlement of commodity derivatives, physical metal distribution, metal financing, and exchange-traded products. Contribute to the ongoing development of processes and procedures with teams in Asia, London, Manila, and India to support the growth of the business. Participate in projects, system-enhancement requirements, and process documentation in close partnership with technology teams and colleagues in London and India. Perform front-to-back reconciliations across cash, positions, and inventory; identify discrepancies and escalate them in accordance with established control protocols.
- At least seven years of experience in a commodities role within a financial institution. - Strong knowledge of base and precious metals markets and market practices. - Understanding of Japanese precious metals distribution, including import and export processes and exchange delivery mechanisms. - Understanding of local regulatory requirements for trade reporting and tax invoicing for precious metal transactions. - Strong organisational skills, attention to detail, and proven experience in logistics operations. - Knowledge of commercial deal terms, title-transfer documentation, and delivery terms. - Strong knowledge of the ISDA Commodity Definitions. - Ability to build effective relationships inside and outside the firm and communicate with stakeholders who have varying levels of product knowledge. - Bachelor’s degree. - Strong desktop computing skills, including good knowledge of Microsoft Office applications. - Strong analytical and data-management skills. - Excellent team player with effective communication skills. - Excellent verbal and written communication skills. - Ability to work to tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment. - Fluency in Japanese and English. - Proven ability to leverage AI tools to enhance productivity, optimise workflows to solve business problems, while applying critical judgment to ensure responsible and ethical use of data and AI outputs.
